'Shoe bomber' jailed for life
Recently, a US federal judge sentenced "shoe bomber" Richard Reid to life in prison for trying to blow up a Paris-Miami flight with 197 people on board. Reid, an ex-Frommie, had pleaded guilty to eight charges - including attempted murder and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. This all started back in December 2001, when Reid was overpowered by passengers and crew members after they saw him attempting to light a fuse protruding from one of his shoes on American Airlines Flight 63. (Why make shoe bombs?! Surely, it would be easier just to run up to the plane and chuck a stick of TNT on board and then peg it)
The total of 110 years of imprisonment in addition to the life sentences was more than the prosecution had requested. The terms will run consecutively and effectively rule out any chance for parole, correspondents say. Our unreliable sources tell us that Reid will be spending his time in prison trying to avoid the prison shower-room and making patchwork quilts. Editorial Comment: We think that Richard Reid is clearly a crazy terrorist, who the world would be better off without. It would be ridiculous to suggest that living in Frome could have contributed to his clear mental problems (but it probably didn't help). Spare a thought for his poor old mum (reportedly still in Frome) who has to cope with having a terrorist for a son and living in Frome.
